Trailmix Scroggin Cookies

Delicious, quick, easy and around 110 calories each

I've always got a handful or two of scroggin in my pack, along with muesli bars as snacks when I'm hiking. Then I came across this recipe from the lovely folk at Mediterranean Market in Queenstown, NZ for Scroggin Cookies (ie. Biscuits) and thought I'd give it a whirl. I decided to change the recipe a bit to reduce the amount of sugar and they turned out a treat! Delicious, easy, quick and … [Read more...]

The Three Peaks – The Lazy Way

Three Peaks Whalania Creek Campsite

The Three Peaks in the Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia has been spoken of in hushed and reverent terms by bushwalkers for many decades. There are many stories (tall and true) about the epic feats of physical fitness and mental toughness that is needed to undertake the challenge under the classic trip guidelines. Tips for Hiking Safely

BWRS - Training with Police Rescue and other squads

How not to be another missing bushwalker! Here in Australia, we've jumped head-first into Spring time which means that not only are the wildflowers coming out in abundance in our National Parks, but so too are hikers, that's bushwalkers to us Aussies! Therefore, it seems like a good time to cover off some of the basic preparation that everyone should do before heading out on an adventure, to … [Read more...]

Ettrema Gorge Adventure

Looking down Ettrema Gorge

Easter in Australia can be celebrated in many ways. I mean, let's think about it, any time you get four days off in a row is something to celebrate. For me, one of the best ways I've celebrated Easter was this year, when I set out for Ettrema Gorge for an adventure I'll never forget. http://youtu.be/IE41wzIEUQs?list=UU885b3fcSEShQdz6-v8KwLg Ettrema Gorge is found lying deep within Morton … [Read more...]

Dehydrated Dips on a Hike – Field Tip

Yummy happy campers

Just about everyone I know seems to struggle with creative ideas of what to eat for lunch on a hike, especially for multi-day hikes. After many years of experiments, I've now settled with my 'go-to' of dehydrated dips on crackers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJa67AuV9s0 The great thing about these dips is that you can rehydrate them in their own ziploc bag, then simply rip off the corner … [Read more...]

Following on from last week's post on Easy Hiking food for Overnight Trips, I was sent some product by the nice folk down in Tassie from Strive Food. Easy Hiking Food for Overnight Trips (That’s lightweight too!)

Enjoying the view from Mt Solitary whilst the billy boils.

I'm still staggered by the number of people who say that planning and organising food is the issue that stops them from doing overnight hikes. There's really no reason these days for using that excuse and my suspicion is that if you're still using it, then the real issue isn't to do with the food, but something else. (Ouch!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3nx4kebyvM I've already done … [Read more...]

Hiking Food : Hidden in your Supermarket

Mechanically Separated Chicken

Continuing the theme of trying to get inspired by lunch in the bush, I recently decided to spend some quality time browsing the shelves of my supermarket, to see if there were any hidden gems just itching to get out into the wilderness. I came to realise that I have developed shopping blinkers when it comes to scanning shelves for familiar brands, packaging or solutions. I'm sure some advertising … [Read more...]
